Hi – My name is Nikki, and this blog serves to document my learning as I explore the international culinary options in Philadelphia and the culture and traditions behind them.
Ever since I was young, I have been very interested in food. You may ask, isn’t everyone interested in food? Food is tasty and fun. But, my interest in food started way before that.
I remember when I wasn’t even tall enough to reach the kitchen counter, yet I would try to gather ingredients together in order to attempt to cook them with my mother. She would call me her “little chef” and I would revel in my newfound nickname and helping her. Pasta, Pad Thai, spring rolls, chow mein, chicken masala – these were the dishes that inspired my early curiosity and love for good food.
I have travelled to many different states and countries since my parents loved to travel, and have been sure to try the local delicacies of each place. Some memorable dishes still stand out in memory – fish and chips in London, butter tart in Toronto, appeltaart and bitterballen in Amsterdam, kebabs in Dubai, chaat in New Delhi. All this has fueled my interest in learning and sense of adventure about different cuisines, the cultures behind each food, various recipes and how to cook them.
In my free time, I love to cook, read, listen to music, travel and go to the movies.
I went to school in the area and live in Philadelphia now and absolutely love the fact that the City of Brotherly Love has evolved into a great international culinary melting pot. Its cuisine has been shaped by immigration and has turned into a microcosm of international cuisine, the culture and traditions behind the food.
I am lucky that I get to experience the world all in one city. From the sights and sounds of walking down 9th Street Italian Market, seeing and smelling the fresh vegetables, spices and street foods, eating at Talluto’s Authentic Italian Food, to the fabulous noodle soup at Nan Zhou Noodle House in Chinatown – this is what has inspired me to learn more about Philadelphia’s international food.
Join me as I explore Philadelphia, learn about cuisines from around the world and share my experiences and learning!
